Jesus Himself – The Constant Walk We Long For
There are a lot of Christians today who love the Lord, but they would have to admit that they feel far from Him. The joy isn’t what it used to be. Sin keeps coming back around. Life is full. For some of you, it is caring for a child who needs you constantly. You still read the Word. You still pray. And yet something is missing. You miss that simple walk you once had with Jesus.
Andrew Murray wrote a little book called Jesus Himself. He took us to those two disciples on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. They walked with the risen Lord. Their hearts burned as He opened the Scriptures. And still they did not know it was Jesus Himself. There is a difference between a burning heart and a satisfied heart. The burning comes and goes. The satisfied heart rests because it has recognised the living Person who is right there with you.
Now Jesus never called us just to a few minutes in the closet, or to a good time of Bible study, as important as those things are. He called us to abide.
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me… for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4–5)
The whole idea is relationship. The fruit the Father desires is not something you force.
You do not have to struggle to produce it. As you abide in Christ, it develops naturally.
God is not interested in the works of our flesh, which we are so often trying to offer Him. He wants the fruit that comes from His life flowing through us.
David Wilkerson used to say the same thing with a lot of fire. The heart of the Christian life is not activity, not gifts, not even ministry. It is Christ abiding in you, and you living in fellowship with Him. If you cannot have that communion, His peace, His direction, His nearness, then what else is there?
This goes all the way back to the garden. God walked with Adam in the cool of the day. No shame. No distance. Then unbelief broke that walk, and we have felt the loss ever since.
But praise God, Jesus went to the cross, He took our separation so the relationship could be restored. The door Adam closed has been opened again by the blood of the Lamb. The walk that was lost is now offered to every believer.
So how does this look when the house is noisy, and the quiet times are short?
You just turn your heart toward Jesus in the middle of the day. A short prayer while you are caring for your child, like me. A verse held in your mind. When you fail, you confess it quickly and come right back.
You rest in the fact that He is already with you, whether you feel the fire or not. The feelings may come, and when they do, receive them. But the walk does not depend on feelings, it depends on the One who said, “Lo, I am with you always.”
The invitation is still open as the same Jesus who walked those two disciples to Emmaus is willing to walk with you today. He is not waiting for perfect conditions. He is ready to reveal Himself to the hungry heart that simply turns to Him and stays.
If that longing is rising in you again, the desire for the close walk rather than occasional experiences, come to Him as a child. Tell Him you want Jesus Himself.
Ask Him to teach you to abide. He will not turn you away. The relationship has been restored. The constant walk is still available.
May the Lord open our eyes to know that it is Jesus Himself who walks with us, today, in the ordinary, and all the way home.
