Beautiful Hands – What the Bible Says About God’s Loving Hold on Us

Hello folks, I want to share something tender from my life that led me deep into God’s Word. I’m a dad to a wonderful non-verbal autistic son. We attend a special needs dance class together in Clydebank; it’s a joy to see him move and enjoy the music in his own way.

At the end of the class, we do a gentle massage. He especially loves it when I lightly press and hold his fingers. In those quiet moments, I look at his hands and think, “These are beautiful hands.” They’re perfect in their own way, made by a loving Creator.

That simple thought got me reflecting ~ What does the Bible say about hands?

The Scriptures talk about hands hundreds of times. Hands picture action (what we do), power and strength (God’s might), blessing (lifting hands in praise or laying on for healing), and care (God’s tender hold). Hands can build up or tear down, but when God’s hands are involved, they always bring life, protection, and love.

One verse stands out like a knockout punch of comfort: Isaiah 49:16 (NKJV): “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; Your walls are continually before Me.”

God says, “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands.” Not on the back, not on the arm where it might be covered up, but right on the palms, the most active, visible part.

Every time God moves, works, reaches out, or blesses, there you are, engraved, permanently marked. You can’t forget what’s right there in your hand. And those hands? They’re the same hands pierced for us on the cross. Jesus’ nail scars are the ultimate proof ~ “You’re Mine, and I’ll never let you go.”

Now, to get the full picture, let’s look at the context of Isaiah 49. This is one of those beautiful “Servant Songs” in Isaiah, pointing straight to Jesus, the Messiah, the Redeemer God is sending.

In the first seven verses, the Servant speaks, called from the womb, His mouth like a sharp sword, hidden in the shadow of God’s hand, polished like an arrow in the quiver. He feels at times like His labour was in vain, but God says, vs 6 “Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’”

Verses 8 through 13 paint this wonderful restoration ~ God answering in a time of favour, helping in the day of salvation. Leading prisoners out, making highways in the wilderness, turning barren places into springs of water. No one left behind, from the north, the west, or even distant lands.

Then comes the tender part, verses 14 through 21. Zion, personified as a grieving mother in exile, cries out, “The Lord has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me.” God answers with a question no mother could answer yes to ~ “Can a woman forget her nursing child… Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you.” And here’s the proof ~ “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.” God sees every broken wall, every pain, every struggle, every hard night, and it’s always before Him. He hasn’t forgotten. He never will.

The chapter closes with promises of bringing the children back, nations caring for them like nurses. It’s all about God’s never-forsaken love, not just for ancient Israel, but for every one of us who puts faith in Jesus.

This truth hit me last night, my son had a seizure, these hard nights are what leaves you feeling weary, hands hanging down from exhaustion and worry. But God’s Word lifted me today in Hebrews 12:12: “Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees.”

The context? Hebrews 12 urges us to run the race with endurance, looking to Jesus who endured the cross. God disciplines us as a loving Father to make us holy (verses 5-11). Then comes the “therefore” ~ because of His love and Jesus’ example, lift up those drooping hands! Strengthen what’s weak. Don’t stay slumped, get back up, make straight paths so the lame (what’s hurting) can be healed (verse 13).

For us, after a seizure or any trial, it means leaning on God’s grace, through prayer, rest, medication care, our Vizion church community, and His Spirit.

My gentle touch on my son’s hands reflects a tiny bit of God’s care. And He has us both inscribed on His palms ~ seen, held, cherished, no matter about autism or seizures, or anything else.

Folks, if you’re feeling forgotten or weak today, remember: God’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save. He upholds us with His righteous right hand.

Riches and honour come from Him; power and might are in His hand. Lift holy hands in prayer, bless the Lord. You’re engraved where He can never forget.

May these truths bring comfort to your heart. We are held in the same hands that created the universe and were pierced for our redemption. What a Saviour!

If this encourages you, share it. Let’s strengthen one another’s hands in the Lord.

In His grip!

Peter
