The “Alt” or Alternative Jesus
Hello
We were recently tagged on Twitter by someone holding a banner with an “alternative Jesus” message. It seemed aimed at Christians who are seen as far-right or supporters of President Donald Trump. I’m not sure why it was directed at our small UK-based ministry, but it got me thinking.
The banner listed several points that sounded scriptural at first but were twisted sarcastically. Here’s how they compare with what Jesus actually said in the Bible:
- Fear everyone → Jesus said: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow…” (Matthew 6:34)
- Expel the stranger → Jesus said: “I was a stranger and you took Me in.” (Matthew 25:35)
- Blame the poor → Jesus said: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)
- Ignore the sick → Jesus said: “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers…” (Matthew 10:8)
- Feed the rich → Jesus said: “Go and sell what you have and give to the poor…” (Matthew 19:21)
- Love only thyself → Jesus said: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
- Trust only Caesar → Jesus said: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” (Matthew 22:21)
- Throw lots of stones → Jesus said: “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” (John 8:7)
At Born Again Christians, we are not trying to be right-wing or left-wing. We simply want to be biblical. We aim to teach conservative, fundamental theology with expository preaching and a literal interpretation of God’s Word.
We are not strictly Calvinist or Arminian, we try to stay balanced in the middle, like a see-saw, trusting the whole counsel of Scripture.
Let’s keep our eyes on the real Jesus of the Bible and love one another as He commanded.
God bless you,
Peter
