Does the Sabbath still exist on the isle of Lewis?

Hello,

The Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides is known as one of the last places in Britain where the Lord’s Day is still kept holy. For many years, people spoke of the “Scottish Sabbath,” then the “Highland Sabbath,” and now it’s often called the “Lewis Sabbath.”

On this island of about 20,000 people, the fourth commandment, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy”, has been taken very seriously.

But modern life is bringing changes, and the old ways are under pressure.

It’s encouraging to see a place where God’s Word is still honoured in this way. In our busy world, we all need to remember the importance of setting aside time for the Lord, to worship, rest, and focus on Him.

You can read more about it here: BBC Article – The Lewis Sabbath

As Christians, whether we are under the Old Testament law or not, the principle is still good: one day set apart to honour God and find rest in Him. Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, and every day belongs to Him. But having a regular time to gather with God’s people and rest from our labours is a real blessing.

Let’s pray for the Isle of Lewis, that the Lord would strengthen the believers there and keep His Word central in their lives. And let’s examine our own hearts: Are we giving the Lord the first place in our time and in our hearts?

God bless you,

Peter
