God Is Bigger Than Our Systems

A Simple Look at Predestination, Election, and the Open Invitation

You know, a lot of us have sat under a message that just stirred our hearts to share the gospel more boldly. A study in Acts 18 can do that. Jesus said to Paul, don’t be afraid, keep on speaking, because I have many people in this city. That kind of encouragement is good. We need it. Don’t let fear shut your mouth.

But look, when a local word of encouragement gets turned into a whole system of predestination, it’s wise to back up and look at the whole counsel of God. The Lord hasn’t left us guessing about His heart. He has provided for all.

God Provides for All

The heart of this is simple: God has made full provision for the salvation of every person.

He desires all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9).

Christ died for the sins of the whole world (1 John 2:2; John 3:16). That’s a real provision. Jesus didn’t die for a secret few. He died for the world.

The gospel itself, by the power of the Holy Spirit, is enough to enable a real response from anyone who hears it. People are fallen, yes. But they’re still responsible. They’re able to respond to God’s appeal to be reconciled. The door stands open: “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Revelation 22:17).

Some folks have a new name for that. I just call it God’s free grace. Grace is offered. Grace is sufficient. Grace is not locked to a few. The spotlight stays on the God who freely gives, not on a hidden list decided apart from the gospel call. The Word is living and powerful. When it’s preached, God is genuinely inviting, drawing, and enabling a response.

Foreknowledge, Election, and Predestination

Now Scripture uses these words, so we need to take them seriously. But we don’t have to force them into some rigid system.

• Foreknowledge means God knows everything ahead of time. He’s never surprised.
• Election is according to that foreknowledge (1 Peter 1:2). God chose those He knew would freely respond to His grace.
• Predestination is mainly about the destiny of those who believe —> that they will be conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29).

It’s not that God, before the foundation of the world, arbitrarily picked some for heaven and some for hell. That goes beyond what the texts require. And it makes the character of God smaller than what we see in the open invitations of Scripture.

A lot of good Bible teachers have held this kind of balance for years. They refuse both extreme systems that lean too far one way or the other. They just let the two truths sit side by side: God is fully sovereign, and man has a real free will and a real responsibility. The Bible keeps both without explaining exactly how they fit together. We don’t need to solve the mystery. We just need to preach both.

In other words, God provides. We respond. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17). Regeneration is not some secret work that happens before a person can believe. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).

“Elect” in Context

The word “elect” isn’t always used the same way.

Sometimes it refers to Israel as God’s chosen nation.

Sometimes it refers to believers in this age —> those who are in Christ.

In certain end-times passages it points to the remnant of Israel and those who come to faith during the Tribulation —> the time of Jacob’s trouble —> when many will turn to the Lord.

Context matters. We don’t have to read every occurrence as an eternal, individual decree of who will and will not be saved. Often the Bible is talking about a people God has marked out for a purpose, or about those who are already in Christ, not about a closed list drawn up apart from faith.

God Is Bigger Than Our Categories

Human theological systems are like a little can dropped into a vast ocean. They may hold a little of the truth, but they can never contain the living God.

There’s a word I can’t describe properly, but God is mystical, yet He’s also near. He’s infinitely bigger than any label or system we create. When we try to fit Him into a neat package, we risk making Him smaller than He is.

I believe that the safest and most respectful way is to gently hold the clear truths of Scripture with an open heart, embracing the unresolved tensions where the Bible leaves them. God has given His free grace. The invitation is real —> The responsibility is real —> That’s enough to preach, and enough to rest in.

A Practical Encouragement

So keep preaching. Keep sharing. The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). God has already given His free grace. The invitation is genuine The responsibility is real. And the God who calls us is far bigger than any system we construct around Him.

That’s not a weak middle ground. It’s simply letting the whole counsel of God speak without forcing it into a box.
