You know, I grew up hearing the music of Culture Club and Boy George back in the 80s. Those songs were part of the background of a whole generation. Today I can still appreciate the music without approving of everything in the man’s life.

Recently Boy George has taken a stand that I find noteworthy. He released a song called “We Will Dance Again.” It remembers the terrible massacre at the Nova festival on October 7th. It refuses the false charge of genocide against Israel, and it says clearly, “I stand with the Jews.”

He’s taken a lot of heat for it. From a biblical point of view, that kind of courage is something we can recognise. God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew (Romans 11:1-2). Standing against the rising tide of antisemitism is a good thing.

Now, Boy George is openly living a homosexual lifestyle and the Word of God is very clear that this is sin (Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:26-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

But the same Word also holds out the same wonderful hope to every sinner: “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

My prayer is that he comes to know Jesus Christ in a real way, is born again, and finds the freedom that only the Lord can give, just as men like Becket Cook have experienced by the power of the gospel.

Some folks will say we should never speak anything positive about a person living in open sin, they call it compromise. I understand the concern, but we must never water down the clear teaching of Scripture.

But Jesus had some strong words for the religious leaders of His day who were experts at drawing hard lines while missing the heart of God. He said they strained at gnats and swallowed camels (Matthew 23:24).

Recognising a public stand against antisemitism and for Israel is not the same as endorsing a sinful lifestyle.

Enjoying music from years ago is not the same as celebrating rebellion against God’s design.

We can acknowledge common-grace gifts and moments of moral courage where they appear, while still calling every person, including Boy George, to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone.

So I’ll keep praying for him ~ I will keep standing with Israel ~ And I’ll keep pointing people to the only One who can make anyone a new creation.

The Lord is so good.
