Unite The Kingdom – A Mixed Picture and a Call Back to the Word

I watched the recent “Unite The Kingdom” event with real interest. There were things that encouraged my heart and things that concerned me.

As a believer who simply loves the Lord Jesus and His Word, let me share a few thoughts with you.

The Good and the Concerning

It was good to see so many ordinary people standing up for their nation. Some carried crosses through the streets, that is a powerful reminder in these dark times. Many are rightly angry at the failures of our leaders: the breakdown in justice, the grooming scandals, the rapid changes sweeping across the UK. Righteous anger has its place.

Yet some of what I saw left me uneasy. The swearing in the chants, the crude gestures, even from some of the organisers, these things belong to the flesh, not to the Spirit.

As Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”

Tommy Robinson and others may be pointing out real problems that many churches have ignored, but we must remember our hope is not in any man or any movement.

Our hope is in Christ alone.

Scotland and the UK Have Lost Their Christian Heritage

Scotland, like much of the United Kingdom, has largely turned away from its rich Christian heritage. The Church of Scotland continues to decline.

Recent numbers show the Kirk down to around 229,000 members and still shrinking. Across the nation, only about 39% now identify as Christian, and many of those are Christian in name only, or are nominal.

This is exactly what the Apostle Paul warned would happen in the last days. In 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (NKJV) he wrote: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”

The letter to the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3:14-22 also describes our present condition, lukewarm, self-satisfied, and in desperate need of repentance so that Christ might come in and fellowship with us again.

The Problem with Many Growing Churches

We are seeing some new church plants and hubs growing in numbers, but I fear much of the growth is not what it appears to be.

What draws the crowds is often entertainment, loud music, lights, and an experience that feels more like the world than the house of God. It is not a deep hunger for the pure Word of God.

Other churches do open the Bible, but they stay mostly topical, many stories, many applications, but very little real meat.

This kind of teaching can leave people shallow and unprepared for the days ahead. The Lord has always blessed simple, systematic teaching through His Word, verse by verse and chapter by chapter. That is how the early church grew strong.

Hebrews 5:12-14 (NKJV) speaks plainly: “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles… solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”

What We Really Need

What we need today is a return to the simple, powerful Word of God. We need churches that teach the Bible clearly and systematically, that lift up the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, and that preach the full Gospel, the reality of sin, the glory of grace, the call to repentance, and a life of holiness.

True revival will never come through politics or rallies alone. It will come when God’s people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from their wicked ways. The promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 still stands.

The remnant who love sound doctrine may seem small, but God has always worked through a faithful remnant. Let us keep praying for Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Let us support what is true and good, while refusing to settle for entertainment Christianity or dead, formal religion.

May the Lord raise up many more Bible-believing fellowships that give the people the pure meat of the Word. And may many who carried crosses in recent days come to know the living Christ personally and deeply.

“To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:20 NKJV)
