Why We Believe in a Young Earth
A Plain Bible Answer for Everyday Christians
Hello folks, I love the Bible and read it every day. By watching Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel, he taught to read Genesis the way it is written – as real history.
Many Christians today believe the earth is very old, but I believe the Bible clearly shows a young earth, created by God about 6,000 years ago.
Let me share with you why I believe that.
1. Genesis 1 Tells Us What God Did – In Six Normal Days
Genesis 1 is not poetry, beloved. It is straightforward history, just like the rest of Genesis, Exodus, and the Gospels.
“And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Genesis 1:5 NKJV)
God repeats this six times, “evening and morning.” He created everything in six days and rested on the seventh.
On the fourth day He made the sun, moon, and stars so we could measure real days, seasons, and years.
If the Lord had meant long ages, He could have said so. But He chose the word “day” and made it very clear with “evening and morning.”
2. The Hebrew Verbs in Genesis 1 Do Not Allow a Big Gap
Some teachers suggest there is a big time gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:3. They point to the Hebrew verbs, the perfect tense in verse 1 and a different form starting in verse 3.
But look at the rest of the Bible, folks! The same verb pattern appears in other passages where there is clearly no long gap.
For example, Genesis 4:1 says, “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain.” Ezra 1:1 and Daniel 1:1 use this same pattern with a normal flow of events.
The Hebrew in Genesis 1 simply does not open the door for billions of years. It flows as one continuous, straightforward account.
3. Exodus 20:11 Connects Creation Week to Our Week
God gave Israel the Ten Commandments and explained the Sabbath with these words:
“For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:11 NKJV)
He told His people to work six days and rest on the seventh because that is what He did at creation.
This only makes sense if God’s creation week was six normal days, just like our weeks.
4. The Genealogies Give Us Real Years
Geneses 5 and 11 list the ages of real men from Adam all the way to Abraham. These are not symbolic gaps. They are father-to-son records with the age of each man when his son was born.
From Adam to Abraham is about 2,000 years. Add another 2,000 years from Abraham to Christ, and 2,000 years from Christ until now.
That brings us to a creation date of roughly 6,000 years ago. The Bible gives us enough clear information to know the age of the earth.
5. Jesus Took Genesis as Real History
Our Lord Jesus Himself treated Genesis as real history. He said:
“But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female’.” (Mark 10:6 NKJV)
He also spoke of Noah and the Flood as actual events (Luke 17:26-27). Jesus never treated Genesis 1-11 as myth or poetry.
He received it as true history.
6. Death Came After Sin – Not Before
The Bible tells us that when God finished creation, He looked at everything and said it was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). There was no death or suffering until Adam sinned (Romans 5:12).
The fossils, thorns, and disease we see only make sense after the Fall and especially after the great Flood in Noah’s day.
A world with millions of years of death and suffering before Adam simply does not fit the clear teaching of Scripture.
7. The Whole Bible Fits Together on a Young Earth
Genesis 1-11 is written as history, not like the poetry we find in Job or the Psalms.
The Flood explains the fossils and rock layers all over the earth. And God’s great plan of redemption begins with a real Adam, a real Fall, and a real Saviour who came to fix what sin had broken.
When we simply read the Bible for what it says, a young earth makes the best sense.
Final Encouragement
Folks, I’m not a scientist, but God’s Word is clear enough for ordinary people like us, the Holy Spirit is our Teacher, and He helps us understand the Scriptures.
I choose to believe what the Bible plainly says about creation, just as we teach here at Born Again Christians.
Science may change, but “the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8 NKJV).
Let’s stand firm on the plain reading of God’s Word. The Lord created the heavens and the earth in six days, just as He said.
He is mighty enough to do it that way, and that is exactly what the Bible declares He did.

Let’s keep trusting the whole Bible, from Genesis to Revelation.
Keep Bible Strong.
God bless you,
