Hello folks,
We had a great Bible study in Glasgow today. There were seven of us gathered together, and we spent time in the first chapter of 1 John. What a wonderful letter!
The Apostle John wrote this when he was around 90 years old — the last of the apostles still alive. His purpose was to encourage true believers and to expose false teachers who were bringing dangerous ideas (Gnosticism) into the church. These teachers said Jesus was only a spirit or phantom, not fully God and fully man. This kind of error later developed into the Arian heresy, which is still used today by groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
John wanted God’s people to know the truth and to keep walking closely with the Lord.
The big idea we saw in this chapter is: “Continue Walking in the Lord.”
Here are the main points we looked at:
- Walk in the Light (verses 5-7) God is light. We should walk in His light and not hide in darkness.
- Walk in Fellowship (verse 7) As we walk in the light, we have real fellowship with God and with one another.
- Walk in Forgiveness (verses 8-10) We all sin, but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us.
It was a powerful time in the Word. No matter how long you’ve been a Christian, we all need to keep walking with Jesus, in the light, in fellowship, and in His wonderful forgiveness.
If you’re in the Glasgow or Helensburgh area and would like to join us for Bible study, please get in touch.
There’s nothing better than opening God’s Word together!
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7, NKJV)
God bless you,
Peter
