Children to receive Covid-19 vaccinations? – A Theological Response

Hello, my friends.

I wanted to share this thoughtful and biblical response from Jamie Franklin on the very serious issue of offering Covid-19 vaccinations to children. Jamie is a minister who has been vocal on these matters from a Christian perspective. I believe his article is worth reading and praying about carefully.

I have already written a longer post on the ethics of these vaccines in general. Here I will give some theological reflections and keep it short. I hope the reader will find this helpful and convincing, and that you will consider sharing it.

Children are at greater risk from the vaccines than from Covid-19

Reports from Imperial College London show that the risk of death from Covid-19 for children is extremely low (almost zero for ages 0–9 and very low for teenagers). In contrast, there are serious concerns about the safety of the vaccines for children, including a high number of reported adverse events and deaths in the adult population, with no long-term safety data available for children.

Children should not be used to protect adults

The main argument for vaccinating children is to reduce transmission to adults. This is morally wrong. It treats children as a means to an end — sacrificing their wellbeing to protect older people. This goes against the clear teaching of Scripture that every human being is made in the image of God and that we, as adults, are called to protect and nurture children, not the other way around.

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, do not hinder them” (Mark 10:14), and gave a solemn warning about causing little ones to stumble (Matthew 18:6).

As Christians, we must reject any policy that would put children at risk for the supposed benefit of adults.

Let us pray for wisdom, especially for parents facing these difficult decisions, and that our nation would value and protect the lives of the young.

God bless you,

Peter
