Why Mormon Teachings Don’t Match God’s Word

Hey, friends, recently, a dear lady from Somerset, reached out through our SermonAudio site.

She loves Jesus and wishes to be baptised to show her faith, but Mormon missionaries found her giving false hope, also giving her a Book of Mormon. It broke my heart ~ she’s ill, nearing the end, and might be confused by teachings that don’t align with the Bible.

Years ago, we distributed The Visitors tract and various others by Chick Publications to warn people about Mormonism and other cults.

Today, I’m sharing that same warning for you, through my experience and as I always say, it is God’s Word alone (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV). We love Mormon people; they’re sincere, but they are lost. However, we have to speak the truth in love (1 Peter 3:15).

Let’s examine why their teachings don’t align with the Bible, using their own scriptures and the NKJV, so you can know Jesus, the true Jesus.

Mormon Teachings vs. God’s Word
Folks, “Stick with the Bible ~ it’s God’s final Word.” The Mormon Church adds teachings that don’t line up with Scripture. Let’s check a few, using their own books and the NKJV, so you can see the difference clear as day.

  • God: Mormons teach God was once a man who earned godhood, with a body of flesh (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22). John 4:24 NKJV says, “God is Spirit.” He’s eternal, not an exalted human!
  • Jesus: They say Jesus is a created being, a spirit-brother of Lucifer (Pearl of Great Price, Abraham 3:24–27). John 1:1 NKJV declares, “The Word was God.” Jesus isn’t just a spirit ~ He’s God Himself.
  • Holy Spirit: Mormons teach the Holy Spirit is a separate spirit being with a “spirit body,” not fully God (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22–23, “The Holy Ghost… is a personage of Spirit”). John 16:13 NKJV says, “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth.” The Holy Spirit is God, not a lesser being, working as one with the Father and Son (Matthew 28:19 NKJV).
  • Trinity: Mormons teach God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are three separate beings, united only in purpose, not one God (Joseph Smith—History 1:17, God and Jesus as distinct beings in the First Vision). Matthew 28:19 NKJV says, “Baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” The Bible teaches one God in three Persons, not three gods teaming up (Deuteronomy 6:4 NKJV, “The Lord our God, the Lord is one!”).
  • Salvation: Mormons teach you need works and temple rituals to become a god someday (2 Nephi 25:23, “saved… after all we can do”). Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV says, “By grace you have been saved through faith, not of works.” Salvation’s a gift, not a paycheck.
  • Scripture: They add the Book of Mormon and other texts to the Bible (2 Nephi 29:6, “A Bible, we have got a Bible”). Revelation 22:18-19 NKJV warns, “If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues.”
  • Church Name Confusion: Mormons claim to be the “true church,” but it took Joseph Smith eight years and three revelations to name it “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1 in 1830, 115:4 in 1838, after earlier names like “Church of Christ”). If God restored the true church, why the delay? Acts 11:26 NKJV says early believers were simply “called Christians” from the start.
  • Exaltation to Godhood: Mormons teach faithful members can become gods of their own planets (Doctrine and Covenants 132:20). Isaiah 43:10 NKJV says, “Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me.” God alone is God ~ forever.
  • Great Apostasy: Joseph Smith taught a “Great Apostasy” wiped out the true church after the apostles died, until he restored it in 1830 (Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith—History 1:19, God told him all churches were “wrong”). Matthew 16:18 NKJV says, “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Jesus promised His church would stand, not vanish!
  • Joseph Smith as Prophet: Mormons believe Joseph Smith is a true prophet of God, sent to restore the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 135:3, “Joseph Smith… has done more… for the salvation of men than any other man”). But his 1826 fraud conviction and failed prophecies don’t pass the biblical test. Deuteronomy 18:22 NKJV says, “If a prophet speaks… and the thing does not happen… the Lord has not spoken.”

Stay focused on Jesus, not extra books or strange teachings. “If it ain’t in the Bible, it ain’t from God.”

Mormon History: Red Flags
Folks, again, “Test the roots of any teaching by the Word.” The Mormon Church’s history has some serious red flags that don’t match Scripture. Let’s examine what The Visitors tract pointed out, and more, so you can see why it’s shaky ground.

  • Joseph Smith: Mormons say he was a prophet who got golden plates from an angel (Book of Mormon, Introduction). But in 1826, a New York court convicted him of fraud for treasure-hunting. Matthew 24:11 NKJV warns, “Many false prophets will rise and deceive many.”
  • Polygamy: They practiced polygamy until 1904, with Joseph Smith having over 30 wives (Doctrine and Covenants 132). Genesis 2:24 NKJV says marriage is one man, one woman. That’s God’s way, period.
  • Book of Mormon: It talks about horses and steel in ancient America (1 Nephi 18:25). Archaeologists find no evidence for those back then. If it’s not true, it’s not God’s Word.
  • Racial Teachings: Until 1978, Mormons banned Black men from their priesthood, citing 2 Nephi 30:6 (dark skin as a curse). Galatians 3:28 NKJV says, “All are one in Christ Jesus.”
  • False Prophecies: Joseph Smith made predictions that didn’t happen, like the Civil War leading to global conflict (Doctrine and Covenants 87, 1832). Deuteronomy 18:22 NKJV says, “If a prophet speaks… and the thing does not happen… the Lord has not spoken.”
  • Temple Prophecy: In 1833, Joseph Smith prophesied a temple would be built in Independence, Missouri, “in this generation” (Doctrine and Covenants 84:4-5, “This temple shall be reared in this generation”). No temple was built there; Mormons were driven out, and “this generation” passed. Deuteronomy 18:22 NKJV says a true prophet’s words come true, or he’s not from God.

I say, “If history doesn’t hold up to Scripture, run back to the Bible.” That’s what we’re doing here, folks.

Protecting Souls from Deception
That woman’s story disturbed me. She’s ill, possibly approaching the end of her life, and lacks knowledge of theology. Seeing missionaries walk the streets in Glasgow fills me with deep anxiety as they search for the vulnerable. With over 109,000 Mormon missionaries in 2024, they’re reaching out to people who might not recognise the differences. The vulnerable, the elderly, or anyone new to the Bible can get confused by the Book of Mormon’s “another testament” talk.

Let’s examine how Mormons attract people and how to stay grounded.

  • Missionary Push: Mormons train thousands of young missionaries to share the Book of Mormon, knocking on doors worldwide. They’re sincere, but their message adds to the Bible (1 John 4:1 NKJV, “Test the spirits”).
  • Friendshipping Tactic: Mormons use a plan called Friendshipping, where members befriend people to invite them to church or meet missionaries (LDS manual Preach My Gospel, ch. 9). It feels like love, but it’s a step to convert you. Galatians 1:8 NKJV warns, “If anyone preaches another gospel… let him be accursed.” Test their kindness against Scripture.
  • Stay Biblical: If Mormon missionaries or friends visit, smile and say, “I trust the Bible alone.” Compare their teachings to God’s Word.

Friends, test every teaching against Scripture. I say, “Keep it simple ~ Jesus plus nothing.” Come to Jesus.

Here’s the deal, folks. The Bible’s all you need. John 8:32 NKJV says, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Trust Jesus alone, not extra books or rituals. Romans 10:9 NKJV says, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
